The Grand Tour by Rebecca Squires is a carriage journey which re-envisions the eighteenth-century traverse of the picturesque landscape, the subject-objectification of the view, along with the imperialistic impulse behind the southward movement of the voyage pittoresque. This experiment visually, kinesthetically, and performatively explores the transformation from landscape to image which formed the basis of early modern perception along with the colonial legacy inherent within the picturesque view. The Grand Tour carriage will be pulled by human labor, evidencing the forced labor economy that Enlightenment progress was built upon, proceeding through Belgium over a period of weeks in November of 2022, starting in Binche and stopping in Charleroi, Namur, Leuven, and Brussels, ending in Antwerp as a part of the experimental artistic platform To Be Antwerp 2022 from November 25th to 27th.
