The dream of good food and food, are these two the same things? When the thoughts of having good food, ordinary food, or bad food have lost their identities, and it is the only water that floats inside the rice vessel (hanri). Maybe then we have to become food in order to have a meal. But photosynthesis does not occur in the human body. Then what is it that I am holding onto, I am tidying it to my body again and again? Is it this degrading society that is situated in this vessel, so then fish curry and Biriyani (an Indian rice based dish) must be inside of this rice vessel (hanri). Yes, everything and everyone is inside of it, except me. Statistically speaking Indian women are more malnourished because in most houses they consume what is left after everyone has eaten. A commonly used phase in Bengali households regarding cooking is that the rice vessel (hanri) didn’t hit the oven today. This everyday labor of putting the rice vessel on the oven is a traditionally accepted gender role of women. But this labor of this gender role has never been paid off in any sort, this tradition is being practiced and relevant for women of any caste, class. By tidying up the rice vessel (hanri) with hair in my own body, and placing cut fingernails inside the rice vessel, I am trying to make a symbolic reclamation of women’s agency over the production of food.
